Savannah's original city plan, laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733, survives largely intact as a grid of streets interrupted by 22 public squares shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss. The squares form the structural heart of the historic district, each surrounded by Federal, Regency, and Gothic Revival architecture in varying states of preservation. The combination of the tree canopy and low-angle southern light creates a softly filtered quality at almost any time of day.
