A 50-mile transmountain road bisecting Glacier National Park and crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, considered one of the most scenic drives in North America. Completed in 1933 after 20 years of construction, the road clings to cliff ledges above the McDonald and St. Mary valleys with guardrails marking the most exposed sections. Vehicle size restrictions apply to the center section. The roadside scenery includes hanging gardens, waterfalls, and close wildlife encounters. The road is fully open only for a narrow window in midsummer due to snowpack.
