Silver made Kutná Hora one of medieval Bohemia's richest cities, a royal seat from the 14th century that rivalled Prague in wealth and ambition. Its miners financed the Church of St Barbara, a late Gothic tour de force, while at nearby Sedlec the Cathedral of Our Lady was reborn in the early 18th century in Baroque dress — two buildings whose influence rippled across central Europe. The town centre and both churches were inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
