Legend places the birth of Aphrodite on the shores near Paphos, and the goddess drew pilgrims here for well over a millennium — the Mycenaeans raised a sanctuary to her in the 12th century BC. Occupied since Neolithic times, this corner of western Cyprus preserves ancient villas, theatres, fortresses and tombs, while the floor mosaics of Nea Paphos rank with the finest anywhere. UNESCO added Paphos to the World Heritage List in 1980, the island's first inscription.
