The Tombs of the Kings in Paphos is an underground necropolis cut into solid rock northwest of the modern city, used from the fourth century BCE through the third century CE for burials of the Ptolemaic nobility and wealthy citizens — not royalty, despite the name. The monumental carved chambers imitate the interiors of houses and palaces, some with Doric columns and painted decoration, providing evidence of Hellenistic funerary architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. The site overlooks the sea on the coastal cliffs and forms part of the UNESCO Paphos Archaeological Park.
