Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital and largest city of Brunei Darussalam, situated on the Brunei River estuary at the northern end of the island of Borneo. The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, completed in 1958 and set on an artificial lagoon, is considered one of the most beautiful mosques in Asia and is the architectural symbol of the city and country. Adjacent to the modern centre, the Kampong Ayer water village — a settlement of houses built on stilts over the river and home to roughly 30,000 people — preserves a form of aquatic urban settlement dating back several centuries.
