An island within Lake Toba and itself one of the world's largest lake islands, Samosir is the cultural heartland of the Batak Toba people. Traditional Batak houses with curved, boat-shaped roofs and elaborately painted facades are found in villages such as Ambarita and Simanindo, alongside stone-age megalithic monuments and royal ceremonial grounds. The island's hills rise to around 1,000 meters above the lake surface, offering panoramic views back across the caldera water.
