The Cathedral of St James in Šibenik

Built entirely of stone between 1431 and 1535, the Cathedral of St James in Šibenik was raised without brick or timber, its barrel vaults and dome assembled from interlocking slabs by a unique technique. Work passed through the hands of three master builders — first Francesco di Giacomo, then Juraj Dalmatinac and finally Niccolò Fiorentino — who blended Gothic and Renaissance forms and ringed the apse with 71 sculpted heads of ordinary men, women and children. UNESCO inscribed the cathedral in 2000.
