Šibenik is one of the few medieval towns on the eastern Adriatic coast founded by Croats rather than Romans or Greeks, and its historic core retains a compact labyrinthine quality. The Cathedral of St. James, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of transition from Romanesque to Renaissance, was constructed over more than a century using stone fitted together without mortar. Four fortress complexes ring the town and provide elevated views over the estuary of the Krka River.
