Christianity took root in Poreč as early as the 4th century, and the Euphrasian Basilica preserves the most complete early episcopal complex of its kind anywhere — basilica, atrium, baptistery and bishop's palace still standing together. The church fuses classical and Byzantine art with rare success, its apse aglow with gold mosaics. UNESCO inscribed the episcopal complex in the historic centre of Poreč in 1997.
