Poreč is a coastal town on the western Istrian peninsula whose historic core occupies a small rectangular peninsula, preserving a Roman street grid that remains legible in the modern urban plan. The Euphrasian Basilica, a UNESCO-listed sixth-century Byzantine episcopal complex, contains exceptional gold-ground mosaics that rank among the finest surviving examples of early Christian art in the Mediterranean. Beyond the old town, the surrounding coastline is developed with large resort hotels and pine-shaded beaches typical of the Istrian Riviera.
