On the fourteenth night of each lunar month, the Old Town of Hội An observes a lantern festival in which electric lighting is extinguished throughout the historic quarter and streets and the Thu Bồn River are illuminated solely by silk and paper lanterns. Visitors release flower-and-candle offerings onto the river from Hội An's ancient Japanese Covered Bridge and the embankment below. The ritual combines elements of Chinese and Vietnamese lunar traditions tied to the town's multicultural merchant history.
