Lanterns glow at dusk along the shopfronts of Hoi An, a trading port that thrived between the 15th and 19th centuries and then, bypassed by history, simply stayed as it was. Chinese shophouses, a Japanese covered bridge and Vietnamese tube houses line a street plan little changed since its merchant heyday. UNESCO inscribed the ancient town in 1999.
