A ruined gusuku castle on the northwestern cape of Okinawa's main island, one of the Ryukyuan gusuku sites inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose sinuous stone walls curve across a hilltop with views over the East China Sea toward the outlying islands. The castle served as the seat of the Hokuzan kingdom in the fourteenth century before the unification of Okinawa. The grounds contain over 200 cherry trees that bloom in late January, making it Okinawa's earliest and most photographed blossom site.
