A small castle town north of Nagoya where one of Japan's twelve surviving original castle towers stands above a bend in the Kiso River, originally completed in 1537. The keep is the oldest confirmed surviving castle tower in Japan, and its top-floor observation deck offers a view over the river gorge and the forested hills of Gifu Prefecture beyond. The castle town below retains a preserved historic street with sake breweries and traditional craft shops.
