Alongside Xidi within the same UNESCO World Heritage designation, Hongcun is organized around an artificial crescent lake fed by an underground canal network built in the fifteenth century. The South Lake at the village entrance reflects the whitewashed and black-tiled facades of surrounding merchant houses at dawn. The village served as a filming location for the internationally released film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
