A UNESCO-listed Huizhou merchant village in southern Anhui, Xidi preserves more than 120 residential compounds from the Ming and Qing dynasties behind whitewashed walls and ornate stone memorial archways. The narrow alleyways reveal elaborately carved woodwork, brick reliefs, and stone screens inside the courtyard houses. The village layout, road network, and drainage canals remain largely unchanged since the seventeenth century.
