Granite pinnacles rising from a sea of clouds made Huangshan the measure of all Chinese mountains — praised in art and letters through much of Chinese history and central to the mid-16th-century Shanshui school of 'mountain and water' painting. Poets, painters and photographers still climb it as pilgrims once did, chasing the same views. UNESCO inscribed Mount Huangshan as a mixed World Heritage Site in 1990.
