A freshwater lake at the western edge of Hangzhou, West Lake is encircled by willow-lined causeways, pagodas, and ornamental gardens that together form the cultural landscape recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Su Causeway and the Broken Bridge at the foot of Baochu Pagoda are the most painted and photographed vantages. Dawn over the lake before tourist crowds arrive delivers the clearest light.
