Chele La is a mountain pass at 3,988 metres connecting the Paro Valley to the Haa Valley, the highest road pass in Bhutan. The pass is marked by dense arrays of prayer flags strung between timber poles, creating colourful curtains of fabric against the sky that are a strong photographic subject. On clear days views extend south over the Haa Valley and north toward the snow peaks of the Bhutan-Tibet border. Surrounding subalpine meadows bloom with rhododendrons and wildflowers in spring.
