Kyichu Lhakhang in the Paro valley is among the oldest temples in Bhutan, traditionally counted among a set of shrines said to have been founded in the seventh century by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo to pin down a demoness across the Himalaya. The original chapel, with its worn threshold and ancient images, sits beside a later temple added in the twentieth century. Orange trees in the courtyard are said to bear fruit year-round. The atmosphere is one of deep antiquity and continuous worship.
