Rameswaram is a pilgrimage island in the Gulf of Mannar, connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge, historically India's first sea bridge and still a visually striking rail crossing above shallow turquoise water. The Ramanathaswamy Temple at the town's centre contains a corridor of 1,212 pillars, one of the longest temple corridors in India, lit intermittently by oil lamps. The island sits at the closest point between India and Sri Lanka, separated by the Palk Strait.
