The Ramanathaswamy Temple on the island of Rameswaram is one of the holiest sites in South India, revered as both a great Shiva temple and a stop on major pilgrimage circuits. It is famous for possessing the longest temple corridor in India, a seemingly endless pillared gallery whose ranks of carved columns recede into the distance. Pilgrims bathe in a series of sacred wells within the complex before worshipping the two lingams at its heart, one said to have been set up by Rama.
