Goa is India's smallest state by area, occupying a narrow coastal strip on the western Deccan where 105 kilometres of beaches alternate between tourist-dense stretches and quieter fishing coves. Portuguese colonial rule lasting four and a half centuries has left a distinctive architectural imprint — baroque churches, whitewashed villas, and tile-patterned facades — most concentrated in the capital Panaji and the heritage district of Old Goa. The state's latitude and predictable dry season make it one of the most consistently visited beach destinations in South Asia.
