Old Goa was the capital of the Portuguese Indies, and its churches and convents carried European sacred art deep into Asia. The Church of Bom Jesus, holding the tomb of St Francis Xavier, is the most celebrated of an ensemble whose Manueline, Mannerist and Baroque forms travelled onward to mission territories across the continent. UNESCO inscribed the churches and convents of Goa in 1986.
