Junagarh Fort in Bikaner is a sixteenth-century fortification built by the general Bika Rai on flat desert terrain rather than a hill, and is notable for never having been successfully taken by siege throughout its history. The palace complex within the fort is an accretion of royal buildings added across four centuries, with interiors that include a Mughal-period hall, a Zenana decorated with blue-and-white Chinese tiles, and a Durbar Hall with stained glass and Belgian mirrors. The fort museum holds one of the finest collections of Sanskrit and Persian manuscripts in Rajasthan.
