The City Palace of Udaipur is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, built over a period of nearly 400 years by successive Mewar rulers beginning in the sixteenth century, its white marble and granite facades reflected in the waters of Lake Pichola below. The complex contains eleven separate palaces connected by a network of terraces, courtyards, and corridors, with interiors decorated with mirror work, paintings, coloured glass, and porcelain tiles from Europe and China. From the rooftop pavilions, views extend across the lake to the Jag Niwas island palace and the Aravalli Hills beyond.
