A long sandpit extending south of Saint-Louis city, the Langue de Barbarie is a narrow peninsula of dunes and coastal wetland that shelters a major colony of great white pelicans, grey herons, and spoonbills. The estuary mouth where the Senegal River meets the Atlantic is a critical stopover for Palearctic migratory birds, and hundreds of species have been recorded within or adjacent to the park. The narrow peninsula can be navigated by pirogue, offering close views of roosting and feeding waterbirds from the water level.
