Lac Rose, located about 35 kilometres northeast of Dakar near the village of Lac Rose, is a shallow saline lake whose waters turn various shades of pink due to the pigment produced by the halophilic alga Dunaliella salinae and associated bacteria. The colour is most intense in the dry season when salinity peaks, and the lake's surface can appear almost magenta in afternoon light. Small boats operated by local harvesters collect salt by hand from the lake floor, a practice that has continued for generations.
