On a slender island where the Senegal River meets the Atlantic, French colonists founded Saint-Louis in the 17th century, and from 1872 to 1957 it served as the capital of Senegal. Its gridded streets, quays and balconied colonial houses give the town an appearance found nowhere else in West Africa, a stage on which much of the region's cultural and economic life once played out. UNESCO inscribed the island in 2000.
