Arusha National Park wraps around the base of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak, encompassing the Momella Lakes — a chain of alkaline crater lakes tinted different shades of green and blue by varying algal communities — and the Ngurdoto Crater, a small, intact caldera. Colobus monkeys, giraffes, and buffaloes inhabit the montane forest, and the four-day Mount Meru climb is considered excellent acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro. Flamingos frequent the soda lake margins.
