Perched on a dramatic rocky outcrop above a falaj-fed oasis on the western Batinah plain, Nakhal Fort is among the best-preserved and most photogenic of Oman's many hilltop fortifications. The multilevel structure dates in its current form to the early seventeenth century, with pre-Islamic foundations, and overlooks a landscape of date palms and almond orchards fed by a thermal spring. The interior preserves original plasterwork, carved wooden doors, and traditional Omani architectural details.
