One of the oldest surviving areas of Dubai, Al Fahidi preserves a compact network of narrow lanes, wind-tower houses, and courtyard buildings constructed from coral stone and gypsum plaster. The district dates primarily from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and now houses museums, art galleries, and cultural foundations. The distinctive barjeel wind towers, built to channel breezes into living spaces below, are the neighbourhood's most photographed architectural feature.
