Israel's principal port city, built on the slopes of Mount Carmel overlooking the Bay of Haifa and the Mediterranean. The Bahá'i World Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, occupies nineteen formally terraced garden levels ascending the mountainside with the golden-domed Shrine of the Báb at its centre, offering one of the most precisely maintained ornamental garden landscapes in the Middle East. The German Colony neighbourhood below preserves a well-preserved 19th-century Templar settlement with stone houses now housing restaurants and cafés. The view from the upper terrace of the Bahá'i gardens down through the gardens to the sea is the signature panorama of the city.
