Olomouc is a university city in northern Moravia with a remarkably intact baroque core and the highest density of historic fountains in the Czech Republic after Prague. Six baroque fountains representing mythological figures occupy the upper and lower town squares, and the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column rises 35 metres in the upper square as one of the finest examples of central European plague memorial architecture. The 12th-century Cathedral of St Wenceslas has a tower visible from across the Moravia plain.
