Orava Castle occupies a narrow 112-metre limestone crag above the Orava River in northern Slovakia, its multiple building phases visible as a layered stack of courtyards ascending from the base of the rock to the upper palatial buildings at the summit. First documented in the 13th century, it was used in 1921 as the primary filming location for F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu. The river valley view from the upper courtyard, looking north toward the Beskydy range, rewards the steep climb through the castle levels.
