Wooden Churches of the Slovak part of the Carpathian Mountain Area

Latin Christendom and the Byzantine world overlap in the Carpathian valleys of Slovakia, and the wooden churches of this 2008 UNESCO World Heritage listing show what that meeting produced: eight timber sanctuaries — Roman Catholic, Protestant and Greek Orthodox — raised between the 16th and 18th centuries. Built by local carpenters, each denomination shaped plan and silhouette to its own liturgy, and painted walls and ceilings glow within.
