Spišský hrad is among the largest castle complexes by area in Central Europe, occupying a dolerite crag above the Hornád River valley. Its ruined walls and towers stretch across the hilltop in a silhouette visible from many kilometres across the surrounding plain. The castle's upper courtyard contains a Romanesque palace from the 12th century, and the site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage property together with the adjacent town of Spišské Podhradie.
