Levoča, Spišský Hrad and the Associated Cultural Monuments

Above the Spiš plain rises one of eastern Europe's largest castle complexes: Spišský Hrad, its Romanesque and Gothic fabric of the 13th and 14th centuries remarkably intact. The listing pairs the castle with the walled town of Levoča, where the church of St James shelters a forest of late Gothic altarpieces — including Master Paul's carved high altar of about 1510, some 18.6 metres tall. UNESCO first inscribed the site in 1993, later extending it to take in Levoča.
