The Nufenen Pass at 2,478 metres is the highest road pass entirely within Switzerland, connecting the Val Bedretto in Ticino with the Goms valley in Valais. The pass road was built between 1964 and 1969 and is one of the last major Swiss Alpine roads to open and close seasonally. The bare plateau at the summit provides a stark, treeless view of the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks.
