The Grimsel Pass at 2,164 metres connects the Hasli Valley in the Bernese Oberland with the upper Rhône Valley in Valais, passing a chain of reservoir lakes built to serve hydroelectric power stations. The Grimsel Hospice on the pass has offered accommodation to Alpine travellers since medieval times, with the current building incorporating an older structure from the seventeenth century. The bare granite landscape above the treeline and the deep blue of the Grimselsee reservoir are characteristic of the route.
