Schaffhausen is the capital of the canton of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, its old town characterised by oriel windows projecting from guild houses along the main streets. The Munot fortress, a circular Renaissance fortification dating to the 1580s, overlooks the city from a vineyard-covered hilltop. Schaffhausen is the northernmost Swiss canton, positioned in a bend of the Rhine on three sides.
