The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen are the largest waterfalls in Europe by volume, with the Rhine River plunging up to 23 metres over a 150-metre wide rock barrier of Jurassic limestone. Two central rocks rise from the cascade, and boat services carry visitors to a platform atop the larger of them during the summer. Water volume is highest in June and July when Alpine snowmelt supplements the river.
