Makarska is the main town of the Makarska Riviera, a stretch of pebble and shingle beaches backed by the sheer face of the Biokovo massif on the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia. The old town is built around a horseshoe bay with a sheltered harbour fronted by limestone facades and shaded by a central square with a Franciscan monastery. The proximity of the mountain, rising directly from the coastal plain, creates a landscape where beach and alpine terrain are within close reach of each other.
