Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, estimated at three to five million years of age and shared between North Macedonia and Albania along its western shore. The lake's unusual antiquity has produced a high degree of endemic species, and it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for both its natural and cultural significance. The town of Ohrid on the eastern shore surrounds an old walled city with Byzantine churches, a Roman amphitheatre, and a medieval castle overlooking the deep blue water.
