Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region

One of Europe's most ancient lakes, Ohrid harbours freshwater sponges, snails and fish found nowhere else — relics of a fauna millions of years old. Around its shores human history runs nearly as deep: prehistoric pile dwellings lie in the shallows, and on Albania's Lin Peninsula stand the remains of an Early Christian church from the 6th century. The Ohrid region entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 as a Mixed site, and its boundaries today span the lake between Albania and North Macedonia.
