Mostar is the principal city of Herzegovina, bisected by the Neretva River and known above all for the Stari Most, the reconstructed sixteenth-century Ottoman stone arch bridge whose single span across the river gave the city its name. The bridge was destroyed during the 1990s war and rebuilt in 2004 using the original Ottoman techniques and stone, earning UNESCO recognition. The cobbled bazaar quarter of Kujundžiluk on the west bank preserves a dense concentration of Ottoman-period craft workshops, mosques, and caravanserais.
