The stone arc of Stari Most leapt the Neretva for four centuries, emblem of an Ottoman frontier town where mosques, Turkish houses and later Austro-Hungarian streets grew side by side. Shelling destroyed the Old Bridge in 1993 along with much of historic Mostar; its faithful reconstruction, completed in 2004 with international and UNESCO support, made the site a symbol of reconciliation. The Old Bridge area of Mostar was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2005.
