Vis is the outermost inhabited island of the central Dalmatian group, historically closed to foreign visitors during the Yugoslav military era, which preserved its unspoiled character. The two main settlements, Vis Town and Komiža, retain authentic fishing-village atmospheres with relatively little tourist infrastructure. The island's remoteness and crystal-clear waters attract divers and sailors, while the inland vineyards produce the Vugava grape variety found almost nowhere else.
