Plitvice Lakes National Park

Over thousands of years, water rich in dissolved limestone has laid down travertine dams at Plitvice, ponding into a descending chain of sixteen lakes linked by waterfalls and threaded with caves — and the process is still building the barriers today. Bears, wolves and rare birds inhabit the surrounding forests. UNESCO inscribed Plitvice Lakes National Park among its first natural sites in 1979.
